APHS Managing Partner & Group CEO, Stuart Giles, named regional winner in Ernst & Young Entrepreneur Of The Year

APHS is pleased to announce that Stuart Giles, APHS Managing Partner & Group CEO, has been named a regional winner in the 2010 Ernst & Young Entrepreneur Of The Year awards. Stuart joins other outstanding entrepreneurs from across Australia who will compete for the ultimate prize of being named 2010 Ernst & Young Entrepreneur Of The Year.

Like most young boys, a baggy green cap was the pinnacle of Stuart’s youthful aspirations. However, age (and insufficient talent!) saw Stuart cast his boyhood dreams aside and go on to carve an impressive career in pharmacy management. Taking the reins of an organisation firmly entrenched in hospital pharmacy gave Stuart the opportunity to apply his passion for healthcare, innovation and a natural aptitude for financial viability. With APHS’ major private hospital client shifting to an
in-house pharmacy model, Stuart was faced with the ultimate sustainability challenge – innovate APHS in order to grow or risk watching the organisation wither and die. Repositioning APHS at the forefront of specialist oncology pharmacy and automated medication compliance took leadership and courage, and it was these qualities that caught the eye of Ernst & Young’s Entrepreneur Of The Year judging panel. In an industry that rarely gets credit for being entrepreneurial, Stuart is certainly one of the success stories.

Stuart will join his fellow regional winners at the national award ceremony in Sydney on 24 November 2010.

For media queries regarding Stuart Giles’ win please contact Jenny Scott, Brand & Communications Manager, on 07 3347 9526.

Influenza doesn’t recognise State borders, so we are delighted to announce that APHS through its Home Therapeutics brand recently acquired the HealthVax business under which our vaccination business will expand nationally. HealthVax, an established Victorian brand, gives us a strong base from which to market our vaccination services to the Southern States.

The first early success we celebrated was an important tender win last month, being selected as the successful influenza vaccinator provider for Sydney Buses, Newcastle Buses and Western Sydney Buses.

The 3 year contract includes the administering of Influenza Vaccinations which is offered to several thousand staff. Andrew Wells, APHS Regional Manager South Eastern Australia noted that, “There are also some requirements for Hepatitis B Vaccinations and post-vaccination serological testing to ascertain if the Hepatitis B Vaccinations have elicited a positive response.”

A delighted Darryl Grundy added, “This is a significant breakthrough for the HealthVax brand operating under Home Therapeutics, giving it a strong foothold in NSW to explore further opportunities from.”

The new Board which will oversee the long term strategy and direction of APHS and provide Governance began with an overview of the business and coming challenges and opportunities.

Its members include Tom, Cathie & Stuart representing the APHS Partner Group together with John Jackson, Group Director of the Pharmacy Practice Unit and Chris Attard in his executive role of GM Finance, Information Systems and Logistics.

Two independent appointments have been made to balance the Board’s make up. Annette Schmiede brings a wealth of experience in Australia’s health and aged care sectors. With a career spanning three decades, she has a deep knowledge of the structure, funding and policy framework of health and aged care in Australia and is conversant with the major issues confronting these industries. Annette has worked extensively with the Catholic Health Care sector and most recently was Chairman of St John of God Health Services from 2003 to 2007.

Joining Annette is Bruce Annabel, a well known and respected Pharmacy Industry figure. Founding Partner of JR Pharmacy Services, a division of JR Chartered Accountants, Bruce is the leading authority on the financial and strategic planning aspects of community pharmacy and the integration of these into the development of a unique healthcare service proposition. Bruce has had a long term strategic involvement with APHS and the Advisory Board is a fantastic vehicle to formalise this role.
